My position wiht the US Peace Corps was an assignment with World Food Program (WFP) in Sierra Leone - an institutionalized feeding program that made great strides after CARE fell out in the 60s because of corruption, but then the war . . . however, the one big meal provided at the school was what made it possible for kids to come to school, learn and be fed, and mobilized the entire village to participate in the match program that was carefully re-crafted after CARE. This was the early 90s - makes me want to look into what they are doing now to alleviate. Also worked in the food-for-work (multi-NGO projects) program. How can we know this without cringing? I am struggling lately with how little consideration we give to poor people worlwide. Our actions have consequences albeit untentional.
