Desiree - thanks for your research. My position wiht the US Peace Corps was an assignment with World Food Program (WFP) in Sierra Leone - an institutionalized feeding program that made great strides after CARE fell out in the 60s because of corruption, but then the war . . . however, the one big meal provided at the school was what made it possible for kids to come to school, learn and be fed, and mobilized the entire village to participate in the match program that was carefully re-crafted after CARE. This was the early 90s - makes me want to look into what they are doing now to alleviate. Also worked in the food-for-work (multi-NGO projects) program. Thanks so much for putting this issue back on my mind.

How food is produced and who has access to that food has been one of the most eye opening learning adventures of my adult life. I agree that not knowing is not an excuse - but once you know better you do better. Or atleast I hope so....

I have yet to get over learning that the yield from the sorghum fields I pass are sold for cattle feed AND to poor nations for human consumption. How can we know this without cringing? I am struggling lately with how little consideration we give to poor people worlwide. Our actions have consequences albeit untentional. We must be responsible for our own enlightenment.

Hi Steve,
I am glad you enjoyed the post. I learned so much from the UN Food Program about this importan issue. It still blows my mind that the majority of the hungry in the world are farmers.

I hope it moves people to action!
